Always Merry and Bright !

Always Merry and Bright - a World War One patriotic postcard designed for F. W. Woolworth & Co. Ltd. by F.G.Lewin

Always merry and bright !

A lion wearing a sailor's beret, smoking a pipe, winks and smiles as he mans a gunboat.
The cheerful look is in marked contrast to the dreadful losses sustained by the
Royal Navy and the Merchant Marine as Britain and Germany fought for supremacy at sea,
The card was one of a series drawn for Woolworth's by F.G. Lewin, a famous Edwardian illustrator,
who had previously designed gravatures for the works of Charles Dickens.
